Bespoke Hand-Painted Nursery Mural

The nursery of a Pimlico townhouse on Warwick Square was transformed with a hand-painted mural depicting a Beatrix Potter-inspired woodland scene, commissioned by parents preparing for the arrival of their first child. The mural covers three walls of the room in a continuous panorama featuring woodland animals, wildflowers, and a stream, executed in a soft watercolour style compatible with Edward Bulmer's natural paint background colour. All paints used were zero-VOC and free from synthetic biocides, chosen specifically for the safe indoor environment a nursery requires.

The Challenge

Creating a continuous panoramic mural across three walls with two door and window interruptions required meticulous compositional planning before any paint was applied. The clients had a clear visual reference in the illustrated works of Beatrix Potter and Cicely Mary Barker, which needed to be reinterpreted at wall scale while maintaining the delicate, gentle quality of the original illustrations. The room's cream background — applied in Edward Bulmer's Bone, a traditional chalk-based paint — required the mural colours to be completely compatible with its natural formulation.

Our Approach

Our muralist began with detailed pencil sketches of the complete panorama, working with the clients through two revision rounds to agree the composition, scale, and character positions. The background colour was applied first, then the general landscape washes were laid in with large brushes before progressively more detailed elements were added — tree trunks and branches, then foliage and ground cover, then individual animals, flowers, and finally fine detail work and highlights. All mural paints were artists' quality gouache and watercolour compatible with the natural paint background, with a final protective coat of water-based matte varnish to allow the walls to be gently wiped.

The Result

The nursery mural has become the centrepiece of the family's home — their daughter's first room is a genuine work of art that will grow with her and that can be repainted around as her tastes develop. The clients shared photographs widely among their social circle, generating three additional mural commissions within three months of completion. The parents described seeing the completed mural for the first time as one of the most emotional moments of their preparation for parenthood.

It exceeded every expectation we had. Walking into the room for the first time when it was finished, we both cried. Our daughter is going to grow up in something truly beautiful, and that means everything to us.
