Case Study

Zero-VOC Full-House Eco Painting — Victorian Villa

A five-bedroom Victorian townhouse in Notting Hill required a complete interior redecoration using exclusively zero-VOC, natural paint products. The owners, a family with two young children and a member with chemical sensitivities, specified that no conventional paint products should be used anywhere in the property.

The Challenge

Specifying a full zero-VOC paint scheme across a large Victorian property — including heavy-traffic hallways and staircases, a ground-floor kitchen-dining room, five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and all joinery — required careful product selection to ensure that the eco range could deliver adequate performance and durability in each environment. The original lime plaster in most rooms also needed to be respected; several previous coatings had been applied inappropriately and needed to be removed.

Our Approach

We developed a room-by-room specification using three core eco products: Edward Bulmer Natural Paint for the principal reception rooms and bedrooms, where the historically researched colour palette and genuine zero-VOC lime formulation were ideal; Earthborn Claypaint for the children's rooms and nursery, for its particularly low-emission clay and mineral formulation; and Earthborn Eggshell for bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, and all joinery throughout. Original lime plaster was assessed in each room; where previous vinyl emulsions had been applied, we carefully removed them using a low-pressure steam system to restore the substrate's breathability before eco coatings were applied.

The Result

The completed house is a showcase for the quality achievable with natural paint products. The Edward Bulmer colours — Bone in the drawing room, Madeleine in the dining room, and Celestial Blue in the main bedroom — have a depth and warmth that the family finds incomparable with conventional emulsions. No chemical odours were detectable within 24 hours of completion. The client reported that the child with chemical sensitivities showed no adverse reaction throughout or after the work.

We were nervous about whether natural paints could match the quality we expected. The results completely exceeded our expectations — the colours are extraordinary and our daughter has had no reaction at all. The team was thoughtful, expert, and genuinely passionate about the products they use.
