Case Study

Mansion Flat Contemporary Transformation

A lateral mansion flat spanning the entire first floor of a grand Belgravia terrace was reimagined with a sophisticated contemporary palette. The project involved repainting nine rooms alongside the installation of specialist wallpapers in the master bedroom, dining room, and entrance hall.

The Challenge

The client had selected a number of heavily patterned wallpapers from de Gournay and Zuber that demanded flawless alignment across walls with original Victorian irregularities. The high ceilings, some reaching four metres, added complexity to both the painting and papering works, requiring scaffolding towers in several rooms.

Our Approach

Each wall receiving wallpaper was first re-lined with heavy-duty lining paper hung horizontally to create a perfectly smooth substrate. Our wallpaper specialists then hung each panel with meticulous attention to pattern matching, particularly around the period fireplaces and architraves. For the painted rooms, walls were finished in two full coats of emulsion applied by brush and roller to achieve a flawless, even coverage without roller marks or lap lines.

The Result

The completed flat is a masterclass in balancing contemporary design with period architecture. The de Gournay chinoiserie panels in the dining room have become a talking point among the client's guests, and the seamless integration of bold wallpapers with the muted painted surfaces creates a layered, considered interior.

I had been nervous about the wallpaper installations given the irregularities of a Victorian building, but the finished result is absolutely seamless. The attention to pattern matching around the fireplace in the dining room is extraordinary.
