Tikkurila Paints for London: Why Trade Professionals Are Specifying This Finnish Brand

A professional guide to Tikkurila paints for London decorators: Optiva 5, Luja 20 and 40, Helmi eggshells, and why Tikkurila has become the trade choice for demanding London environments.

Why Tikkurila has gained traction in London's trade market

Tikkurila is a Finnish paint manufacturer with a 160-year history of producing coatings for extreme Nordic climates. Their entry into the London professional market over the past decade has been driven by a simple reputation: the products work harder than most British alternatives at a comparable or lower price point.

The climate argument is persuasive. Products formulated to withstand Finnish winters — freeze-thaw cycling, sustained damp, UV degradation — perform very well in London's persistently damp, polluted urban environment. Decorators who have switched to Tikkurila for exterior and high-traffic interior applications tend not to switch back.

Optiva 5: the interior workhorse

Optiva 5 is Tikkurila's standard interior emulsion, a matt finish with a sheen level of approximately 5 (dead flat). It is water-based, low-odour, and rated for indoor air quality under the M1 classification — the most stringent Finnish indoor air quality standard, which requires near-zero VOC off-gassing after a 28-day cure.

In practical terms, Optiva 5 applies smoothly, levels well from both brush and roller, and covers at 10–12 m² per litre on prepared surfaces. It is not as chalky or atmospheric as Mylands Marble Matt or Little Greene Absolute Matt, but it is significantly more washable — an important distinction for rental properties, family homes, and commercial spaces.

Coverage and opacity on deep or saturated colours are strong. The tinting system Tikkurila uses produces accurate, consistent results, which matters when specifying large volumes across multiple rooms.

Luja 20 and Luja 40: the scrubbable range

For high-traffic interiors — hallways, kitchens, nurseries, commercial offices — Tikkurila's Luja range is the appropriate specification.

Luja 20 (20% sheen, soft sheen) and Luja 40 (40% sheen, satin) are formulated to withstand repeated washing, scrubbing, and physical contact without breaking down or marking. The durability classification under EN 13300 puts both products in the highest washability category.

In London rental properties, where walls need to survive tenant changeovers and remain presentable through repeated cleaning, Luja 20 and 40 are among the most cost-effective interior specifications available. The sheen levels are higher than many clients prefer in residential settings, but the longevity argument is compelling.

Apply Luja over Tikkurila's Eko Primer or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for best adhesion on walls with variable porosity.

Helmi eggshells: the joinery standard

Tikkurila's Helmi range covers eggshell finishes for interior woodwork at four sheen levels: Helmi 10, 20, 30, and 40.

Helmi 10 (near-flat, 10% sheen) is increasingly the professional specification of choice for interior woodwork in period London properties. It produces a quieter, less reflective finish than traditional eggshell without compromising durability. On sash window frames, panelled doors, and architraves in a Georgian or Victorian townhouse, Helmi 10 creates exactly the right tonal relationship with Marble Matt or Intelligent Matt walls.

Helmi 30 is a more conventional eggshell suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and any joinery that needs to withstand cleaning. The finish is hard and adheres well to both wood and previously painted surfaces with appropriate preparation.

Tikkurila's eggshells are water-based with drying times of 2–4 hours between coats — faster than oil-based alternatives, which is relevant on commercial programmes where multiple days on a single door are not feasible.

Exterior products: where Tikkurila excels

For London exteriors, Tikkurila's Facade range covers masonry, render, and stucco. It is a flexible, breathable coating with strong weather resistance and a lifespan that competes with Keim at a significantly lower cost per square metre.

The Ultrafort range covers exterior woodwork — fascias, soffits, window frames — with a formulation designed for high UV and moisture exposure.

Both ranges can be tinted to colour matches of Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and other designer paint brands, which allows a cost-effective split specification: Farrow & Ball or Mylands on visible interior surfaces, Tikkurila on large exterior areas where colour quality is valued but quantity is high.

Trade availability in London

Tikkurila distributes through a network of London trade depots. Paint management systems at several London branches allow accurate batch tinting with same-day availability for standard colours. Trade accounts offer meaningful volume discounts and technical support from knowledgeable staff.
