Dulux Trade for London Decorators: Diamond Matt, Vinyl Matt, Quick Dry — When to Specify What
A professional guide to the Dulux Trade range for London decorators: Diamond Matt, Vinyl Matt, Quick Dry systems, and how to get the best results from each product.
The case for Dulux Trade in professional London work
Dulux Trade is not the most glamorous specification in a decorator's toolkit, but it remains the most widely used professional paint range in the UK for good reason. The product line is extensive, technically sound, reliably consistent batch-to-batch, and available from trade centres across London with same-day stock on virtually every product.
For large commercial programmes, rental turnarounds, and residential work where the client's priority is durability rather than designer-brand provenance, Dulux Trade delivers excellent value. Understanding which product to specify for which application is the key to getting the best from the range.
Diamond Matt: the high-durability interior emulsion
Dulux Trade Diamond Matt is the top-tier interior emulsion in the range. The "Diamond" designation indicates the highest scrubbability classification — the product is rated to withstand 10,000+ scrub cycles under EN 13300 without visible breakdown. In practical terms, this means it will survive everything a London family home, rental property, or commercial space can throw at it.
Diamond Matt dries to a flat, even finish with a slight depth that works well in most residential settings. It is not as chalky or atmospheric as Mylands Marble Matt, but it is meaningfully more durable. For hallways, stair walls, children's rooms, and anywhere that will see repeated cleaning, Diamond Matt is the correct specification.
Coverage is 14–17 m² per litre on prepared surfaces — significantly better than most premium designer brands and relevant on large schemes.
Apply over a Dulux Trade Primer Undercoat on bare or previously unpainted surfaces, or directly over sound, clean existing emulsion.
Diamond Eggshell: the joinery companion
Diamond Eggshell pairs with Diamond Matt for a complete high-durability scheme. It is water-based with a sheen level of approximately 20–25%, suitable for woodwork in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and commercial settings.
Drying time is 2–4 hours between coats, and the finish is hard enough to resist knocks and scuffs that would mark softer eggshell products. On rental properties undergoing a full refresh, specifying Diamond Matt walls and Diamond Eggshell woodwork throughout delivers the most cost-effective durability outcome.
Vinyl Matt: the workhorse emulsion
Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is the standard interior emulsion — a step below Diamond in scrubbability but adequate for most residential applications and available at a lower cost per litre.
It is the right choice for bedrooms, formal reception rooms, and areas of light use where a clean, even flat finish is the primary requirement. Coverage is similar to Diamond Matt.
For period property work where the client is specifying a designer colour from another brand, Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is often used as a base and build coat, with a final topcoat in the specified designer product. This reduces the number of expensive topcoats required while maintaining colour accuracy.
Vinyl Soft Sheen: the practical mid-ground
Vinyl Soft Sheen occupies the space between matt and eggshell — a low sheen finish with better washability than Vinyl Matt but less reflectivity than a conventional eggshell. It is widely used in London kitchens, bathrooms, and rental properties where a full eggshell looks too hard but flat matt is impractical.
Not particularly sophisticated in appearance, but very practical. A standard specification for London landlords prioritising longevity over aesthetics.
Quick Dry systems: when time matters
The Dulux Trade Quick Dry range covers primer, undercoat, gloss, and eggshell formulations designed for fast-turnaround programmes. Recoat times of 1–2 hours are achievable in normal London conditions (above 10°C, below 80% RH).
Quick Dry Primer Undercoat is particularly useful on commercial programmes — office refurbishments, hotel room refreshes, and rental voids — where the painting programme is constrained by handover deadlines. It provides adequate opacity and adhesion for a same-day or next-day topcoat.
Quick Dry Satinwood is the joinery finish of choice when a satin rather than eggshell specification is required and time is the limiting factor. It applies well, levels reasonably, and dries hard overnight.
Weathershield for exteriors
Dulux Trade Weathershield is the exterior masonry range, designed for London's persistently damp climate. The product is formulated with fungicide and algaecide, which is relevant on the north-facing walls and basement areas of London properties where biological growth is a recurring issue.
Apply over a Weathershield Stabilising Primer on friable, chalky, or previously painted surfaces. Coverage varies by surface texture: 8–12 m² per litre on smooth render, less on rough-cast or pebbledash.
Colour matching at trade centres
Dulux Trade colour matching at London trade centres is fast and accurate. The Dulux Heritage range allows specification of period-appropriate colours in the Dulux Trade formulation — a practical option when a client wants a broadly sympathetic colour without the premium price of Farrow & Ball or Little Greene.
