Earthborn Claypaint: A Breathable Finish for London Homes
Learn why Earthborn Claypaint is the ideal breathable, eco-friendly choice for London properties with lime plaster, period walls and sustainability goals.
What Makes Earthborn Claypaint Different
Earthborn Claypaint is a clay-based emulsion that offers something most conventional paints cannot: genuine breathability. For London homes — particularly period properties in Belgravia, Chelsea and Pimlico — this matters far more than many homeowners realise. Older buildings constructed with lime mortar and lime plaster need to breathe. Seal them with a modern vinyl emulsion and you trap moisture within the walls, leading to damp problems, blown plaster and deteriorating brickwork.
Claypaint allows water vapour to pass through the paint film, working in harmony with traditional building materials rather than fighting against them.
Why Breathability Matters in London Properties
London's housing stock is remarkably diverse, but a significant proportion of homes in central boroughs were built before 1919. These buildings rely on a different moisture management strategy to modern cavity-wall construction. They absorb moisture and release it — a process known as the breathable envelope.
When a decorator applies standard vinyl emulsion to lime plaster, the paint creates a vapour barrier. Moisture becomes trapped behind the paint film, eventually causing:
- Bubbling and flaking paint
- Damp patches and tide marks
- Salt crystallisation (efflorescence) on wall surfaces
- Degradation of the underlying lime plaster
We see these issues regularly in properties across Westminster, Kensington and Fulham where previous decorators have used inappropriate products. Earthborn Claypaint avoids all of these problems.
The Practical Benefits
Beyond breathability, Claypaint offers several practical advantages for London decorating projects:
Virtually zero VOCs — Earthborn Claypaint contains negligible volatile organic compounds, making it suitable for bedrooms, nurseries and homes where air quality is a concern. There is almost no paint smell during or after application.
Excellent coverage — Despite being a natural product, Claypaint covers well. One litre covers approximately 11 square metres, and most colours achieve full opacity in two coats over a prepared surface.
Beautiful flat matt finish — The clay content produces a uniquely soft, chalky appearance with genuine depth. Colours appear to shift subtly with changing light, lending walls a warmth that vinyl emulsions struggle to match.
Stain resistant — The clay formulation is naturally resistant to marks and stains. Minor scuffs can often be wiped away with a damp cloth.
Colour Range and Selection
Earthborn's palette is thoughtfully curated, with colours that suit period interiors without feeling dated. Shades like Freckle, Donkey Ride and Nellie sit comfortably in Georgian and Victorian rooms, while brighter options such as Rosie Posie and Delilah Blue work well in more contemporary settings.
For homes in Mayfair and Knightsbridge, we often recommend the warmer neutrals — Muddy Boots, Bugle and Tom's Bakery — which complement the high ceilings and generous proportions typical of these areas. In north-facing rooms, where light can feel cool and flat, a warm clay shade makes a remarkable difference.
Surface Preparation for Claypaint
Claypaint adheres well to most surfaces, but preparation remains essential:
On lime plaster: Brush down any loose material and ensure the plaster is sound. New lime plaster should be left to cure fully — typically a minimum of four weeks — before painting. No mist coat is required, which is one advantage over conventional emulsions.
On previously painted surfaces: If the existing paint is sound and well-adhered, Claypaint can be applied directly after a light sand. If the old paint is flaking, it must be removed back to a stable surface. Where vinyl emulsion has been applied over lime plaster and is failing, we strip back to bare plaster before proceeding.
On new gypsum plaster: A mist coat of diluted Earthborn emulsion (50:50 with water) provides the key needed for topcoats to grip.
On woodwork: Claypaint is designed for walls and ceilings only. For woodwork, Earthborn offers a separate Eco Chic range, or we recommend compatible products from other breathable paint manufacturers.
Application Technique
Claypaint applies differently to conventional emulsion. It has a thicker consistency and is best worked with a medium-pile roller, laying off in one direction to achieve an even finish. Cutting in with a brush requires a steady hand, as the paint sets relatively quickly.
We advise against over-rolling or going back into partially dried areas, as this can disturb the finish. With the right technique, the result is a beautifully smooth, uniform surface.
Cost Comparison
Earthborn Claypaint is priced at a premium compared to standard emulsions, but the comparison is not entirely fair. The coverage rate is competitive, the product requires no separate primer on lime plaster, and the long-term benefits — particularly in avoiding damp-related redecoration — make it excellent value for period properties.
For a typical reception room in a Chelsea townhouse, the additional material cost of Claypaint over a standard emulsion is modest relative to the overall decorating budget.
